The history of Vinho dos Mortos dates back to the early 19th century, during the Second French Invasions of Portugal, when people sought to protect their most precious possessions from the invaders’ looting—particularly wine, which was buried in the cellars, beneath the barrels and wine presses. Vinho dos Mortos is certified as a Transmontano Regional Wine and is produced from grapes sourced primarily from old vineyards—where replanting is limited to replacement needs—located on the slopes of the village of Boticas, which boast unique climate and soil conditions.
