MAD Aguardente de Medronho is based on arbutus trees planted and cultivated on three estates in the Alqueva area: Herdade do Rio Torto, Herdade Monte Santos and Herdade do Vale. The medronhos are harvested between October and January and placed in special stainless steel tanks, fermenting for around two and a half months.
The entire MAD production process follows traditional processes. Distillation takes place in a unique distillery in Portugal, created exclusively for the Medronho Museum because it allows controlling the speed and temperature of the distillation.
Around 10% of this spirit serves as the base for Melosa – Medronho Honey Liqueur, which follows the traditional recipe, also including water, lemon and cinnamon.
